Library hosts free activities for all ages

The Boyle County Public Library offers free activities, special events, and online resources for the community. Programs include crafting, interactive games, STEM activities, and weekly storytimes. In addition, free tax preparation services will be offered through mid-April. Here is a closer look at some of the upcoming events at the library:

Morning Storytime & Afternoon Storytime

Join us for storytime at the library! Each week we will read stories and have a themed sensory activity for young children to enjoy. Morning Storytime will be held on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 10:30 a.m. Afternoon Storytime will be held on Thursdays at 12:30 p.m. in the youth department. Toddlers and preschoolers are all welcome to attend with their caregivers. (Ages 2-5)

Focus on Fitness: Heart Healthy Nutrition

This monthly program series aims to help you improve your health with steps you can take all at home without specialized equipment or supervision. On Tuesday, Feb. 7 at 6:30 p.m., local dietitian Janet Fluty will teach a class on heart healthy diets and answer all of your nutrition questions. This event will be held in the Community Room. (Ages 18+)

Makerspace Engineering

Youth and families are invited to put their engineering skills to the test on Wednesday, Feb. 8 at 4 p.m.

This month we’ll have special marble run challenges, as well as LEGOs, K’nex, and more for free building play.

This event will be held in the youth department. (Ages 5-12)

Pop-up Potluck: Community Recipe Exchange

Share your favorite recipes and sample new ones at this community potluck. On Thursday, Feb. 9 at 6 p.m., the Boyle County Extension office will get things started with some dishes of their own; all participants are encouraged to try their hand. This month’s theme is “Cooking with Chocolate,” but any type of recipe is welcome. Cook up your favorite recipe and bring it to this monthly potluck, then add it to the library’s recipe database. This is a social event with food to share, friends to be made, and fun to be had. Supplies are limited and will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. This event will be held in the Community Room. (Ages 18+)

Teen Game On

Teens are invited to play Nintendo Switch and board games at the library on Fridays from 3:30-5:30 p.m. This event will be held on the 5th Level of the library. (Ages 13-18)

Teen D&D

On Saturday, February 11 from 2-4 p.m. teens can play what some call the greatest role-playing game of all time. Players will venture through campaigns that will test their ability to work together and conquer foes in this tabletop adventure. Registration is required to play. Adult D&D

The library offers a Dungeons & Dragons club for adults that meets at the library on the second and fourth Sundays of the month. Adults can join a session on Sunday, Feb. 12 at noon or 4:30 p.m. No experience is necessary, but registration is required. To register, sign up at the library or email library@boylepublib.org. (Ages 18+)

Free Tax Prep

The Boyle County Public Library has once again partnered with the AARP Foundation and the United Way of the Bluegrass to host free tax preparation service. Beginning on Saturday, Feb. 4, tax professionals will be set up in the library each week on Tuesdays and Saturdays to assist people with the tax filing process through mid-April. This service is made possible through Tax-Aide and the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) programs.

These tax preparation services are available by appointment only.

• AARP Foundation Tax-Aide tax assistance services will be available on Tuesdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. beginning Feb. 7. Although anyone can make an appointment, the program is especially focused on low-to-moderate income taxpayers who are age 50 and older. • United Way of the Bluegrass VITA Tax Preparation Assistance will be available by appointment on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. beginning Feb. 4, for people with eligible household incomes.
