NEWS RELEASE

The Arts Commission of Danville/Boyle, returns to in-person theater after a two year break due to Covid, and will present “The Tipping Point,” by Liz Orndorff for students in Danville and Boyle County Schools and in a public performance at CentreWorks.

“The Tipping Point,” first produced in 2018, uses the story of Eli, a young man who faces a lot of challenges in his life, to talk with students about decision making. Eli thinks he has a tough life. To tackle his problems, he has made some choices which may, or may not be, the best. Two characters are vying for his attention while a third influence enters the picture to provide a steady presence.

The primary focus of the play is the importance making every decision count in building a healthy and productive life. Research indicates that children and young adults are faced with newer and more difficult issues every day. They are exposed to situations and substances pushed at them from ever-changing sources and platforms.

“The Tipping Point” is the first of three plays developed to creatively address the pressures facing students. With the support, and technical assistance, of the Boyle County Agency for Substance Abuse Policy, the Arts Commission commissioned Liz Orndorff to write the three plays specifically for students in middle and high schools. Each play develops the overall themes of building self-worth, self-reliance, self-awareness, and acceptance, and the importance of developing healthy, supportive relationships.

At the conclusion of all the performances, the cast and staff will offer “talk back” and discussion with the audience.

The cycle of three plays is being presented in a three year rotation to middle school students throughout the county. The Arts Commission has partnered with the Danville and Boyle County school systems to use the theaters at Gravely Hall at Danville High School and the Boyle County Performing Arts Center at the Boyle Middle School. All performances are offered free of charge to the schools.

An additional public performance will be at CentreWorks on Feb. 23 rd at 7:00. CentreWorks is on the top floor of the Hub building on 3 rd and Main St. Theater goers may enter through the Spine Center door on 3 rd St. Two elevators provide access to the 3 rd floor. The performance is free.
