Library to host activities for youth and families

NEWS RELEASE

The Boyle County Public Library offers free activities, special events, and resources for the community. Programs are available for all ages and include interactive games, crafts, weekly storytimes, and an art exhibit in the library’s Mahan Gallery. In addition, free tax preparation services will be offered through mid-April. Here is a closer look at some of the upcoming events at the library:

Spring Break: Go Wild at the Library!

Go wild at the library during Spring Break reading a great book! From April 3-8, the youth department will transform into a wild zoo full of animal plushies to play with! Animal-themed activities will be available to do at your own pace during your visit to the library. (All youth ages)

Teen D&D

On Saturday, April 8 from 2:00-4:00 PM teens can play what some call the greatest role-playing game of all time. Players will venture through campaigns that will test their ability to work together and conquer foes in this tabletop adventure. This event will be held on the 5th Level. (Teens)

Morning Storytime & Afternoon Storytime

Join us for storytime at the library! Each week we will read stories and have a themed sensory activity for young children to enjoy. Morning Storytime will be held on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 10:30 AM. Afternoon Storytime will be held on Thursdays at 12:30 PM in the youth department. An ASL interpreter will be at Storytime on Tuesdays. Toddlers and preschoolers are all welcome to attend with their caregivers. (Ages 2-5)

“Memories Worth Remembering” Writing Workshop

Local author Paul Stansbury will lead a four-part workshop on recording and authoring a collection of your life experiences later shared in a published work. Session 3 will be held on Tuesday, April 11 at 5:30 PM with the final session on April 13 at 6:00 PM. This workshop series will be held in the Conference Room. (Adults)

Kentucky Tree Exploration

On Tuesday, April 11 at 6:00 PM, join local tree nurseryman Blake Cothron for a fun and educational exploration of native Kentucky trees. Learn about why trees matter and what are some of their important roles in Kentucky ecosystems are.  You’ll also learn fascinating facts and secrets of Kentucky trees. All participants will receive a free native tree sapling, courtesy of Peaceful Heritage Nursery. This event will be held in the Library Park. If it rains, the event will be moved to the lobby. (All ages)

Kid Cartoons

On Wednesday, April 12 at 4:00 PM, kids can enjoy an afternoon of favorite cartoons at the library as they unwind from the school day. This is the time to come and hangout, watch cartoons, meet friends, and relax. This event will be held in the youth department. (Kids)

YA Super Mario Party

Teens and tweens can play Super Mario video games, make crafts, and more at the library on Thursday, April 13 from 3:30-5:30 PM. We’ll eat snacks, watch Super Mario cartoons, play games, and make crafts inspired by our favorite characters. This event will be held in the Community Room. (Teens & Tweens)

Pop-up Potluck: Community Recipe Exchange

Share your favorite recipes and sample new ones at this community potluck. On Thursday, April 13 at 6:00 PM, the Boyle County Extension office will get things started with some dishes of their own; all participants are encouraged to try their hand. This month’s theme is “Casseroles,” but any type of recipe is welcome. Cook up your favorite recipe and bring it to this monthly potluck, then add it to the library’s recipe database. This is a social event with food to share, friends to be made, and fun to be had. Supplies are limited and will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. This event will be held in the Community Room. (Adults)

Teen Game On

Teens are invited to play Nintendo Switch and board games at the library on Fridays from 3:30-5:30 PM. This event will be held on the 5th Level of the library. (Teens)

Chess Mix

On Saturday, April 15 from 2:30-4:30 PM, visit the library and enjoy an afternoon of chess and a savory snack. This program is for all skill levels. This event will be held in the Conference Room. (All ages)

BCPL Seed Library

The BCPL Seed Library is now open to the public. Located on the main level of the library near the entrance to the Reading Garden, patrons may check out up to five seed packets per month. No library card is required to participate. Planting guides are available and can be photocopied if needed. Seed donations are also accepted. Those who have extra seeds that they would like to share with the community can visit the Circulation desk for complete details on how to donate. The BCPL Seed Library is a free service to the community and is offered in partnership with The Garden Club of Danville.

Free Tax Prep

The Boyle County Public Library has partnered with the AARP Foundation and the United Way of the Bluegrass to host free tax preparation service. Tax professionals will be set up in the library each week on Tuesdays and Saturdays through April 18th to assist people with the tax filing process. This service is made possible through Tax-Aide and the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) programs. These tax preparation services are available by appointment only.

AARP Foundation Tax-Aide tax assistance services will be available on Tuesdays from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Although anyone can make an appointment, the program is especially focused on low-to-moderate income taxpayers who are age 50 and older. United Way of the Bluegrass VITA Tax Preparation Assistance will be available by appointment on Saturdays from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM, for people with eligible household incomes.
