Whitney Cruver, the head softball coach at Danville High School, has been busy preparing her team for a new spring season. The Danville Independent School District asked her about her goals for the team, and more.

• Tell me a bit about your past experience as a coach, and as an athlete.

I grew up in Ohio and went to Bloom Carroll High School where I was blessed to be able to play multiple sports. I ended up lettering in cross country, volleyball, tennis and softball. I then went on to continue my softball career at The University of the Cumberlands. I started coaching when my daughter began playing softball, and I’ve helped coach rec teams, summer ball teams, and given private softball lessons. This is my second year coaching at Danville High School.

• As your team has been preparing for a new season about to start, can you tell me about the work they’ve put in?

Our team started winter workouts in November, and for the past month, we have been practicing five days a week to prepare for games.

• What about your team makes you most proud?

I am proud of many things with my team. I’m proud of how my team works hard and gives their best. I’m proud of how my returning players are teaching and leading the team and the incoming players are showing up everyday eager to learn the game. I am very proud of how they encourage each other.

• What qualities or values do you hope to instill in your players?

My goals for the team this year are simple. I want them to not only be great softball players, but even better teammates and classmates. I want to teach the game to newer players and continue to teach hard work and perseverance to those returning. Leadership, respect and responsibility are paramount on our team along with knowing their value doesn’t lie in their athletic performance but who they are as young women.
