It’s true that every baseball team is 0-0 when the postseason begins, but in the meantime, winning district games is still meaningful.

Boyle County won its first two 45th District games this week to take the early lead in the regular-season standings that will determine district tournament seeding, and coach Adam Blair said the Rebels’ wins were important for several reasons.

“We want to compete and we want to win every game, but we definitely want to win our district games,” Blair said. “The seeding matters for everybody. The 1 seed wants to play the 4; that’s why there are seeds.”

Boyle defeated Garrard County 13-4 in its district opener Tuesday on its home field, then followed that with a 15-8 victory the next night in Lancaster.

Blair said the wins were good for the Rebels’ confidence, and he said they’re also a good indication that Boyle (9-4) is starting to get the timely hits it was missing early in the season.

Boyle got home runs from Cole Sims, Kason Myers and Cameron Owens, a handful of bunts that put pressure on Garrard’s defense and everything in between in a 13-hit attack Tuesday.

“We had some big hits when we needed them, some timely hits,” Blair said.

Sims had three hits and Myers and Sage Dawson had two each Tuesday at the top of the lineup, but the Rebels also got seven hits and seven runs from the final four spots in the batting order, including two hits each by Logan Marsee and Keenan Stewart.

“Really, it’s like two lineups. We’ve got the first half and then hopefully we turn it over and have it again,” Blair said. “We’ve got the same expectations from the 8 and 9 hole as we have from the 1 hole. That’s why they’re in the lineup.”

Garrard (11-4) got only one hit off Boyle pitchers, an RBI double by Merrick Graham in the first inning. Myers struck out eight batters over five innings to earn the win.

The Rebels reached a season high with 15 runs Wednesday, erasing a 4-2 deficit with five runs in the sixth innings and breaking the game open with eight more in the seventh.

The other two teams in the 45th District, Danville and Lincoln County split their two games series. The Patriots won 11-0 on Tuesday, and the Admirals won 3-2 in eight innings Wednesday.
