Mel Hankla, a noted writer, collector, craftsman, researcher and speaker on Kentucky heritage and an authority on the history of the Kentucky Longrifle, will present “Into the Bluegrass” on May 11. Sponsored by the St. Asaph Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the event will begin at 5:30 p.m. with light refreshments at the Art Center of the Bluegrass, 401 W. Main St. in Danville. Tickets are $20 and can be reserved by calling 859-324-9766. Limited tickets will be available at the door. All proceeds will benefit historic preservation.

Hankla, born in 1956 on the banks of the Cumberland Lake in Jamestown, attended Western Kentucky University, earning bachelor’s and master’s degrees and a doctorate from WKU and the University of Louisville. He serves on the Museum Board of the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution and on the Advisory Board of the Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts. Hankla is a member of the Kentucky Material Culture Collectors and American Society of Arms Collectors.

He has authored many books, which will be available for sale during the event.

The St. Asaph Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, founded in 1900 by Mary Johnson Hogsett, focuses on historic preservation, education and patriotism. Members come from a variety of backgrounds with the common bond of having an ancestor who fought in the War for Independence. Daughters are vibrant, active women who are passionate about community service, preserving history, educating children, as well as honoring and supporting the armed service.
