DIS superintendent resigns after one year; Greg Ross is leaving to become head of the West End School in Louisville

Thirteen months after being named superintendent of Danville Independent Schools, Greg Ross announced his resignation, effective June 10.
As rumors of his resignation spread throughout the community, Ross officially announced his resignation in a letter to district faculty and staff that he has accepted the position as Head of School for the West End School in Louisville.
“First and foremost, thank you to the DISD Board of Education,” Ross wrote in the letter. “The board has stuck by me and supported me every step of the way. My decision to resign is by no means a reflection of any negativity with the school board. I could not have asked for a more supportive and collaborative group of community leaders to work with and to represent DISD. Whoever is selected as the next superintendent is immediately blessed with an amazing team of leaders to work with.
“I have enjoyed every moment of my time as an Admiral and will cherish this experience always.”
Ross’s hire was announced last April and he officially started as Danville’s superintendent on July 1, 2022. During the screening process, he indicated he wanted to make Danville his home and did not view the position as a “stepping stone.”
Likewise, he gave no indication he would be a short-timer when he met with faculty, staff and parents during a meet and greet in April 2022 after he was hired.
“I’m looking forward to making Danville my home,” Ross said during the meet and greet. “And not only am I looking forward to making it my home — I’m looking forward to growing in excellence with Danville.
“I’m looking forward to being part of the Danville way. I look forward to us being at the top of every leaderboard … I mean that. That’s not something that I’m just going to say and walk away from. This is title town.
“Our instruction is going to be top-notch. No parent or student is going to want to leave and go to another district. In fact, many of them are going to want to come to us.”
According to his LinkedIn account, Ross served eight years as principal of The Academy for Leadership at Millcreek Elementary in Lexington before being named superintendent of DIS.
He succeeded Tammy McDonald, who resigned in 2021. The position was then filled on an interim basis by Elmer Thomas.
