The Boyle County Public Library offers numerous free activities, special events, and services for the community year-round. Interactive activities often include storytimes, crafting, and book clubs. An activity-packed, all-ages summer reading program will kick off on May 31st. Here is a closer look at some of the upcoming events at the library:

The ABCs of Dog Training Informational Workshop

On Saturday, May 27 from 2:30-4:30 p.m., the Boyle County Public Library will be hosting a workshop aimed at helping you improve your furry friend’s education, discipline, and enrichment. Offered in partnership with local dog trainer Danielle Livasy, there will be information and techniques taught that you can practice at home with your pet. (Please do not bring your dogs to this session.) This event will be held in the Community Room. (All ages)

Adult D&D

The library offers a Dungeons & Dragons club for adults that meets at the library on the second and fourth Sundays of the month. Adults can join a session on Sunday, May 28 at noon or 4:30 p.m. No experience is necessary, but registration is required. To register, sign up at the library or email library@boylepublib.org. (Ages 18+)

Summer Reading Kick-Off Party

The library will host its annual Summer Reading Kick-Off Party on Wednesday, May 31 from 5:30-8 p.m. in the Library Park. Kids can pick up a Book Buddy plushie and enjoy inflatables, outdoor games, and more at this special event. All activities at the kick-off are free. In addition, food trucks will be available for guests to purchase treats if desired.

The theme for Summer Reading 2023 is “All Together Now,” and the library will offer many friendship-themed and fun summer camp-inspired activities and events for all ages, all summer long. Participants can join the reading challenge on Beanstack (boylepublib.beanstack.org) to earn free books and tickets to enter grand prize drawings. Summer Reading is for all ages: kids, tweens, teens, and adults. Thursday FunDay: Sound Explorers

As part of the summer Thursday FunDays performance series, on Thursday, June 1 at 10:30 a.m. the library will bring Sound Explorers to the Jennie Rogers Community Center where you’ll get to meet the instruments in a wind band. Sound explorers will meet 20 different instruments in a fun concert, then get a closer look with an instrument petting zoo at the end. From the flute to percussion instruments, participants will learn what each instrument sounds like and will have an opportunity to hold the instruments! Musicians are from the Madison Community Band and Advocate Brass Band. ASL interpretation will be available at this event. (All ages)

Great American Swing Dance

The Great American Swing Dance has become an annual event during the Great American Brass Band Festival. On Thursday, June 1 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. the tradition continues. Hosted by the Boyle County Public Library with support from the Friends of the Library, the family-friendly swing dance is a wonderful event for music and dancing enthusiasts alike. The dance provides an evening of great music and fun, and is always well attended even when the weather doesn’t cooperate.

The event will feature a swing dance lesson given by Wes Bratcher from 5:30 to 6 p.m., followed by the Swing Dance from 6 to 7 p.m. Music for the dance will be provided by The Walnut Street Ramblers. Held in the Library Park, guests are encouraged to bring a lawn chair and their dancing shoes. The swing dance lesson, dance, and concert are free and open to the public.  (In the event of rain, the lesson and swing dance will be held in the Library Lobby.)

BCPL Seed Library

The BCPL Seed Library is open to the public. Located on the main level of the library near the entrance to the Reading Garden, patrons may check out up to five seed packets per month. No library card is required to participate. Planting guides are available and can be photocopied if needed. Seed donations are also accepted. Those who have extra seeds that they would like to share with the community can visit the Circulation desk for complete details on how to donate. The BCPL Seed Library is a free service to the community and is offered in partnership with The Garden Club of Danville.
