Thompson wins third consecutive regional wrestling championship

Micah Thompson won his third consecutive regional wrestling championship Saturday to lead a list of five individual champions for Boyle County at the boys 7th Region Tournament in Barbourville.

Boyle qualified for the state tournament in 12 of 14 weight classes in the regional meet at Knox Central.

Thompson won the 144-pound class to add to regional titles at 126 pounds in 2023 and 106 pounds in 2022.

Dakota Phillips (113 pounds) and Ethan Masters (120) of Boyle each won a second consecutive regional championship, and Jackson Burger (190) won for the second time in three seasons.

Evan Browning (126) also won a regional title for the Rebels, who scored points in 13 classes but finished as regional runners-up by a single point, losing to Madison Central 281-280.

Thompson, a sophomore, defeated Aden Ritchie of Taylor County by technical fall in his championship match.

In other championship matches won by Boyle:

  • Phillips, a senior, defeated Chris Hollingswoth of Madison Central 8-2.
  • Masters, a sophomore, defeated Kurt Feegle of Wayne County by fall.
  • Browning, a senior, defeated Aiden Zuniga of Taylor County 7-0.
  • Burger, a junior, defeated Guy Bailey of Corbin by fall.

Others from Boyle who qualified for the state tournament, which begins Thursday at Alltech Arena in Lexington:

  • Talon Sanderlyn, third at 106 pounds.
  • Kaygen Roberts, second at 132.
  • Cruz Reynolds, fourth at 138.
  • Judah Carey, third at 150.
  • Jaimen Carey, second at 157.
  • Jax Crowe, second at 175.
  • Paul McClure, second at 285.

In addition, Diego Montoya of Boyle finished sixth at 165 pounds.
