Gallery Hop kicks off Brass Band Festival Thursday

Published 4:00 pm Tuesday, May 28, 2024

It may be May, but summer will be kicked off to a hopping start on Thursday, May 30 when the Arts Commission’s Brass Band Gallery Hop fills downtown with art and music from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Over 60 individual artists will be exhibiting their work at 23 host venues. Eight performing groups will rotate around five different outdoor spaces.

The Boyle County High School 2024 Student Youth Art Exhibit will be on display at Danville Bike and Footwear.  Though not officially part of the Hop, Danville High School Student Art Exhibit will be at the Boyle County Public Library.  Both student exhibits will continue through the Brass Band weekend.

Six art locations are new to the Hop and 21 individual artists are participating for the first time.  Artists will be set up from 4:30 – 7:30 p.m. Performing groups are scheduled around town at 5:30, 6:00 and 6:30.  Performance schedules will be posted at each location.

A merchandise cart of Brass Band items will be at the Purple Peacock. Brass Band Poster Artist, Michael Southerland, will be on hand to sign posters.

At 7:00, the Brass Band Downtown Downbeat concert will begin and continue to 10:00 p.m. in Weisiger Park.  The  Danville Entertainment District is in effect during the evening, which means that people can take alcoholic drinks to go from downtown businesses as long as they stay downtown.  Thank you to the Danville Boyle County Development Corporation for their support for this feature.

Host locations are identified by new, and very colorful banners created by Charlotte Hammond and members of the Pieceable Friends Quilt Guild.  A printed guide to all activities will be available at all host venues.  The guide will also be posted on danvillearts.org.

A new feature this year is an interactive map which includes all location names and addresses and artists.  This map is available through a link on the Arts Commission’s Facebook page.  It can be accessed directly at bit.ly/downtowndanvillegalleryhop.  This feature was developed by Melanie Crossfield of the City of Danville. It will be updated should there be any changes before the Hop.

The music performers from 5:30 to 7:00 include the Danville Children’s Choir, Whitlarks and Friends Strings, Ukeladies, Music on Main students, Opening Act, and First Baptist Church Male Chorus.
