The newly established Artificial Intelligence (AI) Task Force conducted its first meeting last week, marking the initial step forward in Kentucky’s approach to AI integration in government and business.

The 10-member task force is made up of state senators and representatives, including Senator Amanda Mays-Bledsoe, representing Boyle County. The group heard from representatives of Microsoft and the National Association of State Chief Information Officers (NASCI) on the usage of AI in both private and public sectors.

Members of the task force began by outlining the focus and goals of this special committee. The AI Task Force has several critical objectives:

  • Identify strategies other states use to study and monitor AI systems developed, employed, and procured by their agencies.
  • Study the implementation of AI systems within other states’ government operations.
  • Evaluate existing AI systems currently used by Kentucky agencies.
  • Gather information on AI systems used by other groups, including Kentucky businesses and the federal government.
  • Provide recommendations on how AI systems can benefit Kentucky government agencies’ operations and procurement policies and outline legislative initiatives to ensure consumer protection in both the private and public sectors.

Sen. Amanda Mays Bledsoe, R-Lexington, co-chairs the AI Task Force: “Establishing this task force is a crucial step for Kentucky. By examining the best practices from other states and evaluating our own systems, we aim to harness the potential of AI to improve government operations while safeguarding consumer interests. I look forward to taking a deep dive into this issue during the interim. ”
