Library to host final Starlight Movie Night; outdoor foam party

Summer Reading “Adventure Begins at Your Library” is in full swing at the Boyle County Public Library, providing families and people of all ages fun, affordable activities to enjoy this summer. This year, the library is offering many adventure-themed activities. Exciting performances, outdoor movie nights, crafts, and storytimes are included in an extensive list of free events for a variety of ages.

In addition to the activities, patrons are invited to take part in the Summer Reading challenge. Anyone who reads for 12 days and logs their reading using Beanstack will earn a free prize book plus tickets to put toward a prize drawing for any of the many prize bundles the library is offering this summer. Prize bundles are on display in the library lobby. Information on how to register to participate can be found at BoylePubLib.org/SummerReading. The Summer Reading challenge ends on July 31. Participants will need to log their reading, request earned prizes books, and enter raffle tickets before the end of this month. Here is a closer look at some of the upcoming Summer Reading events:

 

BCPL After Dark: 80s & 90s Night

On Saturday, July 20 from 6:00-7:30 PM, take a step back in time to when things were just a tad bit simpler.  Create crafts, partake in snacks, and watch cartoons from the 1980s and ‘90s. Dressing up is not a requirement, but feel free to break out the leg warmers and blue eyeshadow and enjoy the fun! This event will be held in the Community Room. (Ages 18+)

 

Benjamin Bunny’s Birthday Bash

Celebrate Benjamin the Library Bunny’s Birthday with us! Benjamin Bunny is turning one and to celebrate, we’re hosting a birthday party. Join us on Monday, July 22nd from 1:00-3:00 PM for fun games, themed crafts, and rabbit snacks, and stick around to see Ben open his present and eat a special bunny birthday cake. This event will be held in the Youth Department. (All ages)

 

Storytime 

Join us at the library for summer storytime where we sing, play, and read! Storytimes in July will be held outside in the Library Park on Tuesday mornings at 10:30 AM. Each week we will read themed stories and have an activity for toddlers and preschoolers to enjoy. In the case of inclement weather, storytime will be held indoors. (Ages Birth-5)

 

Y.A. Galaxy Slime

On Tuesday, July 23 from 2:30-4:00 PM, join us as we experiment with a variety of materials to create unique, space-inspired slimes from scratch. Infuse your gelatinous concoction with your choice of colors, textures, add-ins, and scents. Then, give a unique, futuristic name to your completed slime. This event will be held in the Community Room. (Ages 11-17)

 

Adventures in Arts: Kids Musical Theatre

Have you ever been interested in getting on stage or thought “I can do that!” while watching a show? On Wednesday, July 24 at 2:30 PM, learn basic skills about musical theatre and see if you would like to take the next steps into this art form. This program is hosted by Opening Act Performing Arts and will be held in the Community Room. (Ages 6-10)

 

YA Starlight Game Night

Join us for the ultimate summer gaming experience as we play video games outside under the stars! On Wednesday, July 24 from 9:00-10:30 PM, teens and tweens can relax, eat snacks, and compete against friends in popular Nintendo games – such as Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe – projected on a giant inflatable screen! We’ll also play a variety of board games, card games, and outdoor games. This event will be held in the Library Park. Inclement weather will move this event indoors. (Ages 11-17)

 

Thursday FunDay: Birds of Prey – Raptors

Join us for our final Thursday FunDay event of the summer! On Thursday, July 25 at 10:30 AM the library will host Liberty Nature Center as they present Birds of Prey at the Boyle County Performing Arts Center. View raptors who were unable to be released back into the wild and are now educational ambassadors for their species to teach about the importance of wildlife conservation. The Liberty Nature Center is proud to be a leading wildlife rehabilitation and education center in Kentucky. This event is free to attend. You can also visit the Bookmobile before and after the show. ASL interpretation will be available. This event will be held at BCPAC – Boyle County Middle School. (All ages)

 

Crochet Club

On Thursday, July 25 at 6:00 PM, the library will host Crochet Club. Held monthly on the fourth Thursday, this program is focused on community, conversation, and crocheting (or knitting). Any and all fiber arts are welcome. Bring your own yarn, needles, and projects, or take from our limited supply and we’ll work independently while gathering with others. This event will be held in the Reading Room. All skill levels are welcome. (Ages 18+)

 

Yoga

On Fridays this summer, dive into a transformative experience where you’ll learn the art of harmonizing the breath, balance, stability, and flexibility. Through guided breathwork, balance poses, and soothing stretches, discover a deeper connection to your body and mind. Join us for an invigorating yet calming journey toward inner peace and well-being. This class will be held on Fridays in July at 11:00 AM in the Community Room. Registration is required. Starlight Movie Night

Watch a movie outside under the stars at the library on Friday evenings in July. First, come early to join our Pre-show Party to play outdoor games. Then, set out your lawn chair in the Library Park to settle in to watch a movie perfect for the whole family. Movie starts at dusk (around 9:00 PM) with an expected runtime of 90-120 minutes. Free popcorn will be available. More information, including film titles, are available in the event listing on the library’s website.

On July 26, watch an animated family-friendly film. With dreams of opening a shop in a city renowned for its chocolate, a poor young boy discovers that the industry is run by a cartel of greedy chocolatiers. Rated PG; 1 hr 56 min; 2023. (All ages)

 

End-of-the-Summer Foam Party

A Foam Party is a perfect way to the end of the summer! On Saturday, July 27 from 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM, you’re invited to dance, play, and party in several feet of bubbly foam fun! This event will be held in the Library Park. (All ages)

 

Silent Book Club

On Saturday, July 27 from 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM, come be a part of BCPL’s chapter of the Silent Book Club. Meet at the library on the last Saturday of the month for a couple of hours of silent reading with other book lovers. Enjoy the community of book club without the pressure of assigned reading! This event will be held in the Reading Room. (Ages 18+)

 

Gallery Exhibit: “That Book Woman Keeps on Riding” 

The library is hosting an interactive exhibit that includes historical photographs, vintage memorabilia, and sound and video clips honoring the Pack Horse Librarians of Eastern Kentucky. One of the most innovative of President Roosevelt’s WPA programs, the Pack Horse Librarians were a remarkable group of Kentucky women who not only brought books to countless Appalachian families during the Great Depression, but also brought hope. The exhibit is offered in conjunction with the Boyle County Public Library; Heather Henson, author of That Book Woman; Pioneer Playhouse, Kentucky’s oldest outdoor theatre; and the Grace Doherty Library at Centre College. The exhibit will be on display in the Georgia de Araujo Gallery at the Library from July 3-27, 2024.
