Danville moves remaining home football games to Centre

Danville has removed its remaining home football games to Centre College in the wake of damage to the electrical system at Admiral Stadium last month.
The school district announced the move affecting the final three home games of the regular season Tuesday.
The Admirals’ first two home games were moved to Centre’s Andy Frye Stadium after a main electrical line at Admiral Stadium was damaged by a surrounding water line.
The district has elected to focus on long-term repairs and renovations to the stadium rather than a short-term fix.
“The district has worked diligently to consider options on how to handle home games for the remainder of the season, and has weighed the cost difference to make the repair at this point in time or to use Centre’s field,” a district news release said.
The decision to move the remaining games to Centre affected Friday’s game against Knox Central and will affect games Oct. 11 against Leslie County and Oct. 18 against Somerset.
The district will pay Centre $4,001 to host its five home games at Andy Frye Stadium. That includes a fee of just $1 that Centre charged the district to host the Whitaker Bank Pigskin Classic on Aug. 30.
According to the release, it would cost $25,000 for a temporary repair to the main electrical line. Rather than go that route, the district will use an established building fund that will be possible with the district’s new tax rate levy for the fiscal year to fund renovations and repairs at the 50-year-old stadium that will begin as early as this fall.
The release said the improvements will come in several phases:
Phase one will include utility-saving projects, with electrical, lighting and plumbing improvements to be completed prior to the 2025 football season.
“The utility-saving projects may qualify for energy savings, allowing us to bond them without using general funds or building bonding dollars, as the projects will pay for themselves in utility cost savings,” Danville superintendent Ron Ballard said.
Phase two will include improvements to restrooms, concession stands and the press box and a few decorative changes, with a goal for completion prior to the 2026 football season. Other possible enhancements could include the addition of a fieldhouse.
“These are very necessary improvements, especially considering the impact that stadium damages have had on this football season, and the fact that the stadium hasn’t had a major renovation since the 1970s,” the district’s release said.
Admiral Stadium, which is also the home of Danville’s track and field team, opened in 1974. Prior to 1974, Danville played its home football games at Centre’s Farris Stadium, which was replaced in 2022 by Andy Frye Stadium on the same site.
