Danville once again made a move forward Friday, though not far enough to move into the win column.
The Admirals’ offense got the ball into the end zone for the first time in a long time and they enjoyed some success in the passing game.
However, they were unable to stop Somerset from running over them en route to a 42-10 win at Andy Frye Stadium.
Trinden Sellers reached the end zone in the fourth quarter for Danville (0-8, 0-2 District 2A-6), but by then Somerset had already run for five touchdowns and most of its 272 rushing yards.
Somerset coach Clay Clevenger won in his return to his hometown for the first time since he coached Danville from 2013-20.
Clevenger, who is in his second season at Somerset, has previously said coaching and winning against Danville was bittersweet.
The Briar Jumpers, who are ranked No. 8 in Class 2A in the statewide media poll, moved the ball efficiently on the ground.
Kris Hughes rushed for 171 yards and two touchdowns and Grayson Gulock had three TDs for Somerset (5-3, 2-0), which has won eight of the last 11 games in this series that dates back more than 100 years.
The Jumpers stopped Danville quickly on its first possession, then moved the ball easily downfield, gaining three first downs before a penalty stalled them.
The Somerset defense scored first after a Danville penalty and a fumble deep in the Admirals’ territory, as Gulock returned an interception 14 yards for a score. Hughes then scored on an 11-yard run to cap a 53-yard drive for the Jumpers’ offense.
On Danville’s next series, Trinden Sellers had a 39-yard gain to the Somerset 2-yard line near the end of the first quarter. When K.J. Dismeaux attempted to go in for the touchdown, Somerset’s defense toughened up and pushed him back.
Facing fourth and goal, the Admirals got a 21-yard field goal from Kaleb Wilcher that pulled them within 14-3.
After Somerset’s offense gained yet another round of first downs and reached the Admirals’ 7-yard line, Hughes went in for his second touchdown.
Following a Danville fumble that was recovered by the defense, Corban Cimala ran 7 yards for a touchdown that gave Somerset a 28-3 halftime lead.
The third quarter began with Somerset gaining four first downs, followed by Gulock scoring from 1 yard out.
Gulock scored again from 4 yards out to make it 42-3 and start the running clock, capping a 40-yard drive after Danville’s previous series ended with a turnover on downs.
Danville gained two first downs in a row as the fourth quarter began, as Naythan Doyle threw to Sellers for a 23-yard gain to the 25-yard and Sellers scored the first Danville touchdown in six games on a 25-yard run.
Somerset outgained Danville 330 yards to 108, and the Admirals got 108 yards through the air.
