A controversial arrest and an online petition calling for the firing of a Danville police officer were the focus of Monday’s Danville City Commission meeting.
The incident centers around Officer T.J. Godbey, a former Stanford Police Department officer, and the arrest of 66-year-old Jon Hardwick at Walmart in October. Police alleged Hardwick was intoxicated and attempting to steal beer, but surveillance footage of the arrest showed a forceful takedown involving three officers. Last week, all charges against Hardwick were dropped, sparking public outcry and a petition that has gained thousands of signatures.
At the meeting, residents voiced concerns over Godbey’s conduct and the dropped charges.
City leaders announced that both internal and external reviews of the incident are underway.
“We recognize that many folks are alarmed by the situation. These reviews will help us better understand the full context of this incident,” Mayor James Atkins said.
Danville Police Chief Tony Gray addressed the public, emphasizing the department’s commitment to transparency and accountability.
“We recognize we serve with the consent of our citizens. I ask for your patience and trust as we move forward with this process,” Gray said.
The city commission has not made a final decision regarding Officer Godbey’s employment.
