William Lorenzo “Ren” Hankla, 78, passed away peacefully on Monday, February 10, 2025, at his home in Perryville, Kentucky. Born and raised in Boyle County, Ren was a proud graduate of Danville High School and the University of Kentucky. He served his country honorably as a Morse Code Interceptor in the U.S. Army’s USAR Control Group, earning the Outstanding Trainee Award, the National Defense Service Medal, and recognition as an outstanding marksman. Ren was also honored with the title of Kentucky Colonel, the highest title of honor bestowed by the Commonwealth of Kentucky as well as a dedicated member of the Sons of the American Revolution.

Ren’s career was marked by his roles as a business manager at Rough River State Park and as a sales representative for various farm equipment companies, including Star Line and Land Pride.

An avid water enthusiast, Ren found peace and happiness on the water. Whether skiing, surfing, scuba diving, or teaching others to ski and swim, his love for the lake was infectious. He took great pride in crafting the perfect tube ride and creating unforgettable memories for his loved ones. Also in his early years, he ventured into modeling through commercials and runway shows.

However, Ren’s true passion was the Hankla family farm, which he proudly managed for 32 years as the seventh generation to own and operate the land. He found joy in maintaining the fields with his meticulously restored vintage tractors, exploring the woods, fishing in the Chaplin River, and hosting cherished week-long family reunions for 20 years. Committed to preserving the land’s legacy, he protected it with a conservation easement and was amember of the Perryville Battlefield Preservation Association (PBPA), passionately working to protect and preserve the historical integrity of the Perryville Battlefield.

Above all, Ren’s relationship with God was first and foremost in his life. His faith was the foundation of his character, guiding his every step and decision. He lived with humility, integrity, and compassion, always striving to reflect Christ’s love in his actions and words. His unwavering faith provided comfort and strength throughout his life.

Ren is survived by his beloved wife of 49 years, Faye Gossett; daughters Renée Hankla of Salinas, CA, and Heather Lea of Nashville, TN; stepdaughter Carol Raskin (David) of Salvisa; stepson Kerry Robison (Marshele) of Greenville; five grandchildren—William Hankla, Marina Bernstein, Matthew and Kola Raskin, and Jes Robison; and his brother, Scott Hankla (Mary Pat) of Frankfort.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry Scott and Virginia Pettus Hankla; sister Martha Hankla McGee and brother David Bitzer.

Ren will be remembered for his deep faith, dedication to his family, and his unwavering commitment to preserving his family’s legacy. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.

A celebration of his life will be held on Sunday, February 23, 2025, at Perryville Community Church, with visitation beginning at 12:30 pm and the memorial service at 1:30 pm. Reverend Paul Moore and Doug Lester will officiate. Following the memorial service, Ren will be laid to rest with military honors at Hillcrest Cemetery in Perryville. Arrangements are under the care of Walden Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Perryville Battlefield State Park, PO Box 296, Perryville, Ky. in memory of Ren Hankla.
