William Carr Durham, 90, died peacefully Sunday evening, November 10, 2019, and Katherine Givens McAfee Durham, 91, his wife, died peacefully in the early hours of Monday, November 11, 2019 at the Danville Centre for Health and Rehabilitation where they were together and able to see each other. They were married March 29, 1951 in Danville and had 69 years of marriage and died a short three hours apart. To those who knew their love and devotion to one another it makes perfect sense.

Katherine was born October 18, 1928 in Mercer County, daughter of the late Givens and Margaret Sampson McAfee, Woodlawn Farm, Lincoln County. Katherine graduated from Centre College and upon graduation she furthered her education at Western Pennsylvania School for the Deaf. Katherine later moved to Danville to accept a position at the Kentucky School for the Deaf (KSD). At KSD she held comprehensive and pivotal positions for 30 years. Katherine was adored by her students and her passion for teaching never wavered. Katherine touched so many lives through her distinguished skills as a teacher and her dedicated work as a member of the Presbyterian Church of Danville. Katherine will be greatly missed and remembered as the truly beautiful, kind and gracious woman she was. She was the dear sister to Ann M. Townes and a cherished aunt.

William Durham was born in Louisville on June 24, 1929 son of the late Robert and Lydia Carr Durham. After graduating from high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served aboard Tarwara, an aircraft carrier. After fulfilling his military commitment, he obtained his real estate license, sold insurance, served as the Tax Assessor for the City of Danville, owned a hardware store, was an auctioneer and repaired electronics. He also volunteered his services to the Presbyterian Church in Danville fixing and servicing everything including the church organ. He enjoyed woodworking, a craft in which he was very skilled, and flying his Cessna plane. He took great pride in rescuing and caring for his cats.

They are survived and lovingly remembered by their son, William G (Mary E.) and granddaughters, Ann Elizabeth Durham of Atlanta, Georgia and Jane McAfee Durham of Cincinnati, Ohio. They were predeceased by a daughter, Alicia Anne Durham.

Visitation will be held at Stith Funeral Home on Thursday, November 14th from 4-7 pm. Their joint funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, November 15, 2019 at The Presbyterian Church, West Main St., Danville. Burial will follow at Bellevue Cemetery.
