Three area museums free Saturday through Smithsonian promotion
Tomorrow may be one of the best days of the year to visit a museum, because you can get into so many museums for free.
More than 1,200 museums nationwide are participating in Smithosonian Magazine’s “Museum Day Live!” promotion on Saturday, which allows anyone to print off a special museum day ticket or display the ticket on a phone and get into a participating museum for free.
A Museum Day Live! ticket will allow one person and a guest free admission, excluding additional costs such as parking or any premium activities.
Six museums in the Bluegrass region are participating, including three local ones: Perryville Battlefield in Perryville, the McDowell House Museum in Danville and William Whitley State Historic Site in Crab Orchard.
• Perryville Battlefield State Historic Site Museum, 1825 Battlefield Road, Perryville tells the story of Kentucky’s largest and deadliest Civil War battle. Museum Day Live! Museum Day hours are 9 a.m.-5 p.m. This venue accepts Museum Day Live! tickets displayed on smartphone screens.
• McDowell House Museum, 125 S. Second St., Danville, is the house where famous physician Ephraim McDowell lived and where it is believed McDowell performed a surgery to remove a 22.5-pound abdominal tumor from a woman who previously believed she was pregnant. It was the first surgery of its type done successfully in the world. Museum Day hours are 10 a.m.-12 p.m. and 1-4 p.m. No new tours start after 3:30 p.m. Smartphone-screen tickets are accepted.
• William Whitley State Historic Site, 625 William Whitley Road, Stanford, is one of the first brick homes west of the Allegheny Mountains and is the site of the first circular racetrack in Kentucky. The estate is known as Sportsman’s Hill and the home was complete in 1794 by William Whitley and his wife Esther. The house served as a gathering spot for early Kentuckians including George Rogers Clark and Daniel Boone. Museum Day hours are 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
Museum Day Live! tickets are good for one museum only and allow access for one plus one guest. Additional guests must pay full admission. For more information, to obtain free Museum Day Live! tickets or to see a complete list of all participating museums, visit www.smithsonianmag.com/museumday.
