1920-2016
Kirtley Williams Settles, 96, of Danville, passed away Friday, Nov. 25, 2016, at Danville Health and Rehab Center. He was born Sept. 8, 1920, in Marion County to the late Elva and Zelma Young Settles.
Kirtley is survived by his wife, Ann Hope Evans Settles. Kirtley was a proud Navy veteran who served in WW II during the battle of Midway, during the entire Pacific theater on the USS Destroyer Farenholt.
He owned and operated Settles Backhoe Services for over 50 years. He started out working at Texas Eastern, where he retired after 18 years.
Kirtley was involved in many things including being a Shriner, past president of Eastern Federation of Mineral Logical Society, past president of Gem and Mineral Club, and charter member of Calvary Baptist Church where he served as adult Men’s Sunday School teacher for over 40 years. He was very faithful, and dearly loved God, family, and country.
Also surviving are a son, Daniel Settles (Marlene) of Danville; a daughter, Lida Settles Hollas (Robert) of Lancaster; a grandchild, Dana Settles (Barry); a great-grandchild, Katara Kogan; a brother, Fern Settles (Carol) of Campbelsville; and a sister, Wanda Vittitoe (Hagan) of Illinois.
Kirtley was preceded in death by two sons, Samuel and Steven Settles; two brothers, Marlin Settles and George Settles; and a sister, Ruth Arnold.
Funeral services 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 29, 2016, at Preston Pruitt Spurlin Funeral Home with Rev. Ernest Martin and Rev. Brent Roe officiating. Burial in Bellevue Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday from 11 a.m.-2 p.m.
Pallbearers will be Trent Roy, Glenn Sorrell, William Wallace Evans, Samuel Evans, Kent Settle, Barry Harmon, and Barrett Griffen.
Memorial contributions are preferred to Danville Christian Academy or Kidney Foundation.
