The Gose Pike Convenience Center is now fully operational after several weeks of construction.
“Next week, we will get all of the tables, the phone and finish trimming the edges,” Solid Waste Director Donna Fechter said.
The floor inside of the building will also be completed next week. In order to put in the new floor, Fechter said the building had to be warm.
Inside the building, she said the bottom of the brick is reinforced with steel concrete, creating a severe weather shelter in case of events such as a tornado.
“That was a huge thing for me in making sure that every one of these convenience centers has a safe area underneath,” Fechter said.
Right now, she said the biggest thing is making sure the compactors are working. New signs will also be placed all around the compactor boxes, she said.
“We are really excited about this,” Fechter said.
In the spring, Fechter said she hopes to begin working on upgrading another convenience center.
“We have three more that need to be upgraded,” she said.
She said she knows which one she would like to work on next and will soon present it to her board and the fiscal court.
“We know what it takes; the second one won’t take as long,” she said. “There were things that have to be done in an exact order and everybody has to be on the same page.”
