Growing for Grace

Bob Ziesmer, a member of First Christian Church in Danville, checks for sprouting weeds in a lettuce patch at Grace Gardens, a garden the church grows to provide produce for the pay-what-you-can restaurant Grace Café.
Grace Gardens was dedicated April 28, 2013. This year, the church is growing lettuce, cabbage, herbs, beans, beets and more for the restaurant, which aims to end food insecurity by letting people pay what they can for their food or volunteer in exchange for a meal. Ziesmer, who is in charge of lettuce in the garden, said because of the unusual weather this year, he planted his lettuce seeds in early March — the first time he’s ever planted them so early.
