Friday’s track meet at Boyle County wasn’t the first time that Boyle County girls and Mercer County boys took first-place finishes.

And it won’t be the last.

The Rebels and Titans were once again at the top of the team standings Friday, with Boyle County girls beating Paducah Tilghman by about 20 points for first place and Mercer County boys doing the same to Boyle County’s boys.

The meet was a who’s who of top Class 2A track teams. On the girls side, the top-four ranked teams (Boyle County, Paducah Tilghman, Mercer County and John Hardin) were in attendance. On the boys side, two of the top three were there — Mercer County and Boyle County — with Paducah Tilghman, currently ranked second in the state, opting to not bring their boys’ team.

“On the boys side we had a lot of great performances,” Boyle coach Brent Wagner said. “Our 4×2 (relay) had a great time and our 4×1 broke the school record from the state champions back in 2012. We jumped up in the state rankings in both of those two events, we had a lot of other performances. Mitchell Paycheck had a great throw in the discus, Will Imfeld had his best jump in the triple. We had a lot of great things happen. We’re taking it meet by meet. It’s all about May.”

Boyle County drawing some of the top 2A teams and performers in the state to its invitational shows just how far the program has come, Wagner said. Elite teams want to see how they measure up against the Rebels and Titans.

“I’m sure that’s the reason why Paducah came,” he said. “We never get to see them, they never get to see us. John Hardin, nine times out of 10 we don’t see them. It makes total sense why they came. It was awesome to have the top four teams in the state on the girls side were at our place. To host a meet like this is very special and it says volumes about the program and how far we’ve come, the fact that they’re willing to come to us. There’s a lot of pride there.”

Results from Friday’s meet will be in Monday’s newspaper, with more quotes from Wagner and Mercer County coach Terry Yeast.
