Perryville will soon have the first of its regular alcohol sales — the Dollar General store on U.S. 150 will begin carrying alcoholic beverages later this year.

No specific date has been given yet, but Anthony Young, Perryville Fire chief and Alcohol Beverage Control administrator, said the store has been given their city and and state licenses to sell malt beverages.

“There’s still some items they have to have,” he said.

Training is one of those items. Young said the state mandates that anyone selling alcohol has to be trained. Included in the packet turned in by the Dollar General corporate offices was the training material for employees.

“It’s very in-depth,” Young said. “From the corporate standpoint, they’re certainly going to want to do it right.”

Crystal Ghassemi, with the Dollar General Corporation, said in an email that the company is “committed to selling alcoholic beverages in a safe and responsible manner by thoroughly training our employees and implementing policies including strict zero-tolerance ID checks, no single-serve sales and no on-premise consumption.”

She wouldn’t give a specific date for when they hope to begin sales.

Young said there had been several inquiries from others regarding obtaining licenses, but no other business has started the process since residents voted to pass the sale of alcohol last summer.

There have been some special event alcohol licenses issued, such as for the festivities downtown for the Perryville Commemoration going on this weekend.

“We’ve had that one a few times,” Young said.
