Forkland Festival: Honoring Heritage

The 46th annual Forkland Heritage Festival took place on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 13 and 14.

Photos by James Morris/photos@jmorrispics.com Susan Reynolds of Forkland stirs a boiling mixture to make lye soap. Reynolds uses a kettle passed down from her husband’s (Jim Reynolds) parents whose mother also used to make the soap. After boiling to a set consistency, the mixture is poured into molds where various oils and scents are added to form cakes of soap.

Photos by James Morris/photos@jmorrispics.com Cam Willams said he had been helping with the festival since he was a child. Williams is currator of the Old Farm and Equipment Museum at the Forkland Community Center, which has on display old tools and farming implements used in the early part of the 1900’s. Willams said he has always been a collector of old tools and said some of the items were his but most were donated to the museum.

Jewell Deene Ellis of Forkland and Ann Evans, who was born in Forkland, said the two reunite most every year to tell visitors of the history of the Forkland community.
