1945-2017
Mauricen Lee “Sonny” Smith, 72, passed away Sunday December 17, 2017. Sonny was born in Danville on September 15, 1945, a son of the late Stanley and Ethel Webb Smith.
Sonny was a member of Salt River Baptist Church, was employed by South Central Bell as a telecommunications engineer and served his country in the Army National Guard. He played on the State Championship 8-man football team for Perryville High School, was all state in basketball and football and attended Campbellsville College under a basketball scholarship. He enjoyed playing chess with his sons, was an avid UK football and basketball fan; he liked tinkering on all sorts of gadgets and enjoyed travelling.
Survivors include three sons, John Maurice Smith, Shane (Jackie) Smith, Lee Hunter (Jessica) Smith, four grandchildren, Hannah, Trinity, Will and Vincent Smith, two sisters, Lindell Logue, Gail (Bob) Holsclaw, and a brother Bob (Ruth Ann) Smith.
In addition to his parents, Sonny was preceded in death by a sister, Joetta Smith.
The funeral service will be 11:00 a.m., Thursday December 21, 2017 at Walden Funeral Home Perryville with Pastor Dave Evans officiating. Burial will follow in Beech Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 – 8:00 p.m., Wednesday December 20, 2017 at Walden Funeral Home.
Pallbearers will be John, Shane, Lee and Hannah Smith, Sam and Micah Price, Andrew Mitchell and Justin Yeast.
Honorary bearers will be Trinity, Will, and Vincent Smith.
In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial contributions to the Children’s Ministry of Salt River Baptist Church.
