Inmates give back

Kentucky Department of Corrections

PRESS RELEASE

BURGIN – Members of the Northpoint Training Center (NTC) Inmate Veterans Club seized opportunities to give to others during the holiday season.

The members assembled 20 care packages to be sent to actively deployed service men and women stationed in Afghanistan. The packages contained stationary, hygiene items, candy and cards. The packages were mailed to the United Service Organizations Center Director for distribution.

In addition, because of the club’s efforts, 388 sealed and prefilled Christmas stockings were handed out to all children under the age of 18 who visited inmates housed at NTC during the Christmas holiday weekend. Each stocking contained eight various types of toys. The Veterans Club also purchased 180 stuffed teddy bears to be handed out to minors under the age of 12 who visit that weekend.

NTC staff, following the end of each visitation period, handed out the stockings and teddy bears prior to children leaving the institution. This project allowed the inmate club members to reach out to loved ones of those incarcerated.

Our kids are the ones that hurt the most this time of year,” said a member of the Veterans Club. “To be able to put a smile on their face before they leave is worth more to us than anything else we could do.”

The Veterans Club also donated 180 teddy bears to the Boyle County Sheriff’s Department. The teddy bears will be given out by first responders if they respond to traumatic events involving children.

Northpoint Training Center is a medium-security state prison located in northern Boyle County. The Inmate Veterans Club held various food sales throughout the year to raise money for various charitable opportunities.
