Danville board approves 2018-2019 calendar

Students in the Danville Independent Schools will be starting the 2018-2019 school year on Aug. 15, after a calendar was approved by the Board of Education Monday night.

Teachers would have professional development days on Aug. 7 and 8 and planning days on Aug. 9, 10 and 14, with opening day Aug. 13. Students would not be required to attend those days.

The first holiday would be Labor Day, Sept. 3, with fall break Oct. 8-12, a planning day on Oct. 29 and Thanksgiving break Nov. 21-23.

Winter break for students will be Dec. 20-Jan 1 and a planning day is scheduled for Jan. 2, with school resuming on Jan. 3. Spring break is April 1-5.

Other holidays and non-school days include:

• Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Jan. 21;

• a professional development day Feb. 15; can be used as a snow makeup day;

• President’s Day on Feb. 18; can be used as a snow makeup day;

• a planning day for teachers on March 22; can be used as a snow makeup day; and

• Good Friday on Aug. 19 is a professional development day for teachers.

The last day of school for students is May 22 and closing day for teachers is May 23. Additional makeup days are built into the end of the calendar, if needed.

The draft of the calendar was presented to the board in December, after being created by a committee consisting of a principal, a board of education member, two parents, one elementary school teacher, one middle or high school teacher, two classified employees and two community members; the committee was created per KRS 158.070, enacted in 2017.
