The Arts Commission of Danville-Boyle County is pleased to announce the recipient of the Arts Citizen of the Year is Michael Hughes. The award will be presented 7 p.m. Jan. 23 at the McKinney Center at Constitution Square. The public is welcome to attend.
Hughes was selected by the Arts Commission Board for his tireless dedication to developing the Soul of 2nd Street Festival, which is in its fourth year. In 2017, a mini-conference was added to focus attention on the arts and culture of the African-American community of Boyle County.
The festival and conference are a collaboration of several organizations and individuals, including the Heart of Danville, Centre College, the Boyle County Public Library and the African-American Historical Society.
Hughes feels this community effort is key to the success of the event and looks forward to continuing work to bring awareness of this important part of our history.
