BREAKING NEWS UPDATE: Police chief says Millennium Park main entrance closed due to fire next door

Danville Police Chief Tony Gray has confirmed there will be no entrance to Millennium Park from Cunningham Drive, the main entrance to the park off of Perryville Road in front of Centenary Methodist Church. Gray says if anyone needs to access the park, they need to enter from the fairgrounds side, off of U.S. 127,  or through the neighborhood of Lannock Drive and Argyll Woods Drive.

Melissa Bailey, associate director of communications for Sunrise, says all residents have been removed from campus and are safe. They are currently being housed by a local church, and Sunrise officials are working to notify their families.

“At this time, we believe the building is a total loss,” Bailey said. “But we need some time to investigate that and assess the damage.”

The fire

Danville and Boyle County firefighters are currently battling a structure fire on the campus of Sunrise Children’s Services, on Perryville Road in Danville. Reports indicate firefighters have been pulled from the building due to it being unsafe, and have been instructed to fight the fire from the outside only. More details will be posted as they are made available. Crews are still calling for more manpower.

Dale Suttles, president of Sunrise, said it’s Sunrise’s activity center that is fully engulfed.

“We’re trying to keep it from reaching our residential units, which house 27 children who live on the campus. Typically ages are 6-18, and we are currently transporting them to a local church gymnasium and feed them pizza so that they’re not around to see it.”

Suttles said reports are indicating the building is a total loss at this point. “Just keep us in your prayers. These kids have already been through so much.”
