Harris places 3rd, Bates 7th at state wrestling tournament

LEXINGTON — Danville’s Don Harris placed third and Boyle County’s Jordan Bates placed seventh in their respective weight classes at the state wrestling tournament on Saturday.

The pair opened the day in the consolation bracket, and Harris ran the table. He finished 4-0 in the consolation bracket to place third in the 182-pound weight class.

Harris defeated Harrison County’s Chase Blanton in the third-place match 4-2, which was a bit of revenge for the senior Admiral. Blanton beat Harris 3-2 in the quarterfinals of the winner’s bracket.

Boyle County’s Bates entered the 132-pound consolation bracket after falling to Walton Verona’s undefeated Ryan Moore in the second round of the winner’s bracket. Bates won three-straight matches in the consolation bracket by fall, before losing to Madison Central’s Gentry Deck 3-1 in overtime.

Bates would win his match for seventh place in overtime, 3-1, over Sheldon Clark’s Daylon Stafford.

Boyle County’s Benjamin Rush (182) went 2-1 in the consolation bracket. He made it to the second day but lost to Moore’s Luis Cerron.

Danville’s Morgan Sallee, Eric Bloh and Spencer Updike each made the second day. Sallee went 2-1, just missing out on a top-eight finish. Bloh lost his only match on day two with a top eight finish on the line. Updike lost his first match of day two to Simon Kenton’s Ian Hughes.
