In preparation for seeing the next Scarlet Cup Theater production “Gidion’s Knot” by Johnna Adams, a background talk will be given by Kathy Miles 3 p.m. March 25 at the Boyle County Public Library.

“Gidion’s Knot,” which runs April 5-8 in a classroom at Danville High School, will let the audience sit in on a highly-charged meeting between a fifth-grade teacher and the mother of one of her students.

Jane Dewey of Danville and Stephanie Pistello of Lexington are featured in the play.

Miles is a licensed clinical alcohol and drug counselor and licensed marriage and family therapist.  She has over 40 years of experience working in a variety of clinical, training and administrative positions in mental health, substance abuse and child welfare organizations. She retired in 2015 as director of counseling services at Centre College, and currently serves as the coordinator of the Boyle County Agency for Substance Abuse Policy (ASAP).

She is a consultant and trainer in the areas of mental health, substance use disorder treatment and prevention, and is a QPR Suicide Prevention trainer, which relates to suicide prevention training and stands for “question, persuade, refer.”

Miles will discuss risk factors for youth suicide, some basic national and Kentucky statistics and warning signs.

“And I never want to miss the chance to give resources available to local folks and ways they can make a difference in kids’ lives,” she says. “What are now being called the ‘diseases of despair’ are on the rise across the country.”

Scarlet Cup Theater is a site-specific theater dedicated to bringing contemporary and thought-provoking dramas to the Danville community.

“Gidion’s Knot” will put audiences in the classroom during the play, which highlights the meeting between Gidion’s mother and his teacher following his suspension and subsequent suicide.
