Elsie Jane Cooper Butcher, 101, born May 23, 1916, in Bronston passed away on March 13, 2018.
She was preceded in death, twenty-eight years ago, by her husband, William Earl Butcher. Both were educators and active in civic organizations in Lincoln County, Kentucky. They were tobacco and beef cattle farmers at Blue Lick Farm on Hustonville Road. Elsie lived on the farm for 57 years.
She is survived by one brother, Esthel (Sue) Cooper of Hustonville, Kentucky; and two daughters, Jane Marie Coleman (Bill) and Rosanne Hack (Rick) both Florida residents. There are four grandchildren, Brett Coleman (Amy) of Columbus, Ohio, Elizabeth Todd (Brad) of Alexandria, Virginia, Jay Hack (Ansley) of Seattle, Washington, and Rebecca Young (Brandon) of Brambleton, Virginia. Additionally, there are eight great-grandchildren, Emma, Zoe, Blair, Coleman, Allyson, Eleanor, Victoria, Reilley; and numerous nieces, nephews and their families.
Elsie attended Berea College in 1932 and received a BS from the University of Kentucky in Education with graduate honors in reading in the 1960’s. She was an educator in the Stanford Independent School District and the Lincoln County School District for twenty-seven years as a teacher and remedial reading coordinator, receiving an Outstanding American Educator award in 1968.
Memberships: Harris Memorial Methodist Church for fifty years, Stanford Presbyterian Church for twenty years, Ladies Tuesday Circle, Wednesday Bridge Club, Stanford Garden Club, Farm Bureau Director, Logan Whitley DAR, Buffalo Springs Cemetery Board, Lincoln County Chamber of Commerce, Charter Member Hustonville Book Club, Charter Member Delta Kappa Gamma, Lincoln County Historical Society, Lincoln County Democrat Women. She donated many hours to community service and won the Lincoln County Outstanding Citizen Award in 2004.
Funeral will take place at Spurlin Funeral Home, 411 West Main St., Stanford, Kentucky. Visitation will be on Saturday, March 17, 2018 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and a Celebration of Life will follow at 1 p.m. with Rev. Jay Mumper and Bro. Jim Erwin officiating. A graveside service will follow the funeral at Buffalo Springs Cemetery.
Pallbearers: Earl Cooper, Larry Brown, Jess Correll, Jerry Gooch, David Campbell, Buddy Pence, Curt Correll, and Shea Lair. Honorary Pallbearers: Bettye Long, Gracie Gilbert, Nell Davis, Shirley White, Joan Bright, Martha Martin, Judy Jones, Lucy Embry, Joan Hafley, Wilma Gooch, and J.R. Hamm.
