A man was injured Thursday afternoon when a Danville School bus struck him as he was walking across South Third Street.

Stephen Bruce, 70, of Danville, was crossing the street at 2:14 p.m. as the school bus, traveling eastbound on West Walnut Street was in the process of making a left turn onto South Third Street, according to Danville Police.

Emergency crews treated Bruce at the scene before transporting him via ground ambulance to Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center. He has since been taken to the University of Kentucky Medical Center for his injuries.

The bus remained in the intersection of South Third and West Walnut around 3 p.m. as police investigated.

Danville Superintendent Keith Look was at the scene and said high school students had been on the bus, which was returning from a field trip. None of the students were injured. The driver was “obviously very shook-up” but seems to be OK, Look said. The driver was being evaluated to ensure there were no injuries, he said.

Police blocked off a block in both directions along Walnut and a block to the south on Third, forcing traffic headed north on that road to turn right onto Martin Luther King Boulevard.

Look said another school bus had transported the students back to Danville High School.
