LOUISVILLE — Superstition has many people believing that Friday the 13th is an unlucky day. However, the latest occurrence of Friday the 13th turned out to be just the opposite for one Stanford man.

Gerald Kidwell bought a $20 scratch-off ticket on Friday, July 13 — and it produced a payout of $250,000.

Kidwell purchased the Kentucky Cash Blowout ticket from the Fort Logan Shell in Stanford and scratched it off to discover he had won the game’s top prize.

When Kidwell made the trip to the Kentucky Lottery Headquarters in Louisville Monday, accompanied by his mother, Phyllis Herring, and aunt, Wanda Hawley, he was still reeling from the win.

“I’m still in shock. It hasn’t sunk in”, Kidwell told lottery officials. “I haven’t had much sleep since Friday as you can imagine.”

When lottery officials asked Kidwell how he kept the ticket safe all weekend, he said with a laugh, “my dogs kept it safe.”

The HVAC worker says he knows exactly what he wants to do with the money. At the top of his list is the purchase of a classic car and then an everyday car. He also plans to help family with some of his winnings, but then the rest will go directly into the bank.

Fort Logan Shell will receive $2,500 for selling the winning ticket.
