Smiley for Danville school board

Published 1:21 pm Tuesday, October 23, 2018

I have known Paul Smiley since moving to Danville 27 years ago. I first got to know him as a fellow parent in the neighborhood and friend. Later as a school volunteer I observed him as teacher, coach and administrator at Kentucky School for the Deaf. I also had the pleasure of serving with him on a not-for-profit board of directors.

I am compelled to write in support of Paul’s bid to serve on the Danville Independent school board because of what I have learned while observing him for many years in a variety of situations interacting with students, parents, other teachers and administrators, and fellow board members. Beyond his vast experience, he has characteristics greatly needed in all forms of public service and essential at this time for the Danville school system.

Paul Smiley is one of the most honest and ethical people I have ever known. Just as importantly, he understands the importance of doing things the right way. He knows the importance of listening to others, working together to build consensus on important issues, staying focused on the board’s roles and responsibilities, and conducting the business of the board with transparency and no hidden agendas.
