Boyle crime reports went up in 2017, State police say law enforcement making more drug arrests

A crime is committed in Boyle County about once every five hours.

According to the recently released Kentucky State Police 2017 Crime in Kentucky report, the average frequency of crimes committed here outnumber those of surrounding counties. For example, Mercer County sees a crime committed about once every nine hours; Garrard about every 12 hours; Lincoln nearly every 18 hours; and Casey County about once a day.

Statewide, a serious crime occurs about every two minutes.

The report also shows an increase in drug arrests in 2017 compared to drug arrests in 2016 in Danville and Boyle County.

The report states there were a total of 1,243 drug-related arrests in Boyle  County in 2017, compared to 880 arrests the previous year.

Drug arrests were also divided into arrests for different drug types. The most arrests — 557 — involved synthetic narcotics, followed by 322 for methamphetamine-related arrests, 192 for marijuana, 117 for heroin and 55 for opium or cocaine and their derivatives.

The numbers were lower for every type of drug in 2016: 493 for synthetic narcotics, 131 for methamphetamine, 135 for marijuana, 74 for heroin and 47 for opium or cocaine.

The total number of driving under the influence of intoxicants arrests also increased in 2017 from 2016. In Boyle County, there were a total of 207 DUI arrests in 2017, including 164 males and 43 females. In 2016, there were 146 DUI arrests made total.

The numbers of surrounding counties’ DUI arrests include: Casey, 82; Garrard, 101; Lincoln, 142; and Mercer, 126.

The KSP report also divided crimes into two categories.

Group A includes 22 crime categories that are considered to be more serious crimes; Group B consists of 11 crime categories that are considered to be less severe crimes.

Group A offenses (not actual arrests) were tracked for both Danville and Boyle County. The first number is the total number of offenses in Danville; the second number is total offenses reported in Boyle County. The total number of offenses reported in Boyle County was 1,436.

Of these reported offenses, hate/biased crimes occurred 25 times in Boyle County; four times in Casey County; 13 times in Garrard County; 12 times in Lincoln County; and eight times in Mercer County

The report breaks down arrests made for serious crimes between adults and juveniles. The total number of arrests in Boyle County was 2,227. The first number is adult arrests and the second number is juvenile arrests.
