Garden club hired arborist to evaluate Constitution Sqaure trees

Constitution Square is one of Danville’s treasures. The Garden Club has for many years supported the park by planting and maintaining the Mary Akin Memorial Herb Garden next to Grayson’s Tavern. Club volunteers also participate in the park clean-up and mulch spreading every spring.  Back in 1944 the Garden Club of Danville provided the funds to plant over 100 native trees that had been donated for the new park. Now the club is pleased to further its support of Constitution Square by providing a survey of the location and condition of those trees and others planted more recently.

We are grateful to The Advocate-Messenger and Robin Hart for telling this story in a recent article but would like to clarify the origins of the project. On its own initiative, the club hired Dave Leonard, a professional arborist, to do an evaluation of each tree in the park, mapping its location, species, size, and condition. Mr. Leonard will provide us with a full report which we will give to the fiscal court via Duane Campbell, County Engineer, and Jennifer Kirchner, Executive Director of the Danville-Boyle County Convention and Visitors Bureau. We expect the report will provide useful information as the county goes about maintaining the trees for the future.
