Mae Causey Lamb

1923-2019

Mae Causey Lamb, 95, passed away peacefully Saturday, June 29, 2019 amongst family and friends.

Mae was born in Leslie County on December 19, 1923, to the late Charles “C.B” and Mary Ann Wells Causey.

In addition to her parents, she is predeceased by a daughter, Hershelean Vonlinger; five brothers, Bill, Herbert, Raymond, Jim and Sam Causey; and two sisters, Lizzie Adams and Goldie Tudor.

She is survived by two daughters, Geraldine (David) Huffman of Perryville and Nancy Mann of Danville; a brother, John Causey of Cartersville; three grandchildren, Daniel Mann, Steve (Kim) Huffman, Mike (Melinda) Huffman; and two great-grandchildren, Naomi and Brandon Huffman.

Mae lived a full life experience as she made her way through some of the most challenging – and rewarding – moments of our time. She understood the hardships of the great Depression and knew the worry of seeing her brothers leave for foreign lands to fight in the Second World War. She came of age at a time of quiet sacrifice, stoic determination, love of country and willing kindness to others. She loved telling stories of the of the mountain life she grew up in, be it tales of sharing a house with her schoolteacher, her Mother’s creativity in making “candy ” without sugar, or the complex negotiations that would turn long hours of work into a game. Simple character strengths such as faith, honesty, sacrifice and respect followed her throughout her life and was illustrated by her family, her reputation and the success of her businesses.

Mae moved to Danville in 1951. She built a successful dairy, cattle brokerage and tobacco farm. Be it tending to her beehives, setting tobacco, or ridding her fields of thistles, her work ethic was legendary. She enjoyed fishing with her grandsons, volunteering, quilting, sewing, needlework, and growing prize-winning flowers and vegetables. She was active in Lexington Avenue Baptist Church’s Joy Class, the Fun-Loving Hearts, Homemakers, and the Ephraim McDowell Hospital Auxiliary.

Mae had power in her silence, that although not often directly recognized, was always noticed. Her quiet example echoed throughout the Danville community for over six decades. This true selflessness, determination and pure benevolence will be missed and remembered by her church, her friends, her family and her neighbors.

The funeral service will be at 1 p.m., July 5, 2019 at Lexington Avenue Baptist Church with visitation beginning at 11:00 a.m. Rev. Phil Quinn will officiate.

Pallbearers will be Steve Huffman, Mike Huffman, Daniel Mann, David Angel, Kent Mann, David Williams, Jerry Rankin, and David Cleveland. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. James Duncan, Dr. Elizabeth “Fizzy” Ramsey, Carolyn Montgomery, Jolene Hutchinson, and Mae’s dear caregivers.
