A thank you to city workers

I have just spent an exhausting afternoon raking up leaves in our front yard, along with the heavy, prickly Chinese chestnuts that are such a nuisance. My leaf piles were still scattered all over the yard and I was about to give up for the day when the city leaf collection truck stopped out front. Four young men hopped out with rakes, an industrial sized leaf blower and their big vacuum. In less than five minutes they cheerfully finished up my work and drove away, leaving me with a clean lawn. What a gift!  The side of their truck said, “Keeping our city beautiful.” It should add that they are keeping our citizens happy.

We don’t always notice or appreciate everything these people do for us beyond cleaning the streets. I have never had an encounter with a city employee that wasn’t satisfactory, from sewer workers to tree trimmers, police, and the nice ladies at the front desk of city hall, plus many others. They are all unfailingly polite, friendly, and helpful.  It’s one of the many blessings of a small town, especially Danville. People often write letters to the editor to complain about something. I’m writing to say thank you!
