From Niki Kinkade, executive director, Art Center of the Bluegrass —
The 2019 Holiday Market at Art Center of the Bluegrass was a tremendous success, thanks to enthusiastic participation by the public. This year, we were pleased to feature giftable artwork by 51 artists who collectively sold more than 700 items. From handcrafted pottery to repurposed jewelry to beautiful original paintings, the Holiday Market showcased the incredible artistic talent that can be found throughout the bluegrass region.
But having fantastic art isn’t enough. Events like the Holiday Market only work because Danville is committed to fostering a thriving arts economy. The 2,000 people who visited the Market are a testament to the value that our community places on shopping local and buying from working artists. In an era where much of commerce is completed online, it was inspiring to see so many people make a conscious decision to direct their purchasing power toward their own community.
The Holiday Market generated more than $13,000 in sales this year and those funds were immediately invested back into our community, with the majority going directly to the artists. A portion of the proceeds from the Holiday Market will also be used to support the programs of Art Center of the Bluegrass, helping fulfill our mission of connecting people to art, culture, and creativity.
Thank you to everyone who chose to Art Local this holiday season!
