News release

The Friends of the Boyle County Public Library have received a $1,000 grant from the Corning Incorporated Foundation. The donation came as a result of Kaori Ohta, an employee at the Harrodsburg plant, receiving an Excellence in Volunteerism Award, which allows winners to select a non-profit charity to receive a grant.

The Excellence in Volunteering Program is designed to recognize Corning employees who help make their communities vibrant by volunteering their free time at non-profits, according to a press release.

“The Corning Incorporated Foundation knows that everyone benefits when communities are robust, when life-long education is supported, and when people are involved and engaged,” said Library Director Georgia de Araujo. “We are grateful for Corning Foundation’s recognition of the Friends of the Library and the tireless work they do on behalf of the Boyle County Public Library.”

Founded in 1979, Friends of the Boyle County Public Library supports the library by purchasing needed equipment and services. This summer, for example, the Friends provided more than $9,000 for the Summer Reading Program for children, which was held online for the first time.

“We are so grateful for this gift,” said Friends President Sallie Bright. “The COVID-19 pandemic has made it impossible for our group to hold its spring and fall book sales which provide a good bit of our funding, so this grant came at an opportune time.”

Supported by memberships and a twice-annual book sale, the Friends group also sponsors monthly programs, a spring and fall film series, and sends out a quarterly newsletter. (All Friends programs are currently on hold due to COVID-19 but will resume as soon as it is safe to do so.)

The library is open Monday-Friday, 9 a.m. – 4:45 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. Patrons with any questions may call the library at (859) 238-7323, use the Live Chat service on the library’s website, or email library@boylepublib.org for assistance.

The Boyle County Public Library serves the city of Danville and the surrounding communities, and is actively committed to enriching the lives of its patrons. The library is located at 307 West Broadway in Danville.
