What happened to the Danville I once knew, reader asks

I just moved back to Danville in April and I have to wonder what happened while I was away?!? Has this city decided to repeal 1st Amendment rights? Is free speech only allowed in certain free-speech areas?
How is it not OK for one person to share memes and to be conservative on social media, but it is OK for others to not only condemn them for voicing their beliefs, but also to threaten bodily harm against them?
How did we get here?
Why are the local law enforcement officials not looking into these threats of violence? Why are these individuals not subject to public scrutiny when they call for making someone “black and blue” as punishment for sharing a meme on their personal Facebook page?
I don’t believe this is the same place I left. It’s changed, and not for the better. The question is, when are we going to change it back?
I’m a conservative, but I’m also a human being. I don’t attack people who have a different view from me. I listen, just in case I might learn something. I discuss. I’m neighborly.
I don’t agree with threatening people. I don’t believe in silencing people. I do believe that someone’s 1st Amendment right ends where libel, slander and calls for violence against a private individual begins. That’s just something reasonable people understand.
But I do have to wonder what our elected officials are doing to support this community during this time of crisis. Are they supporting people who are attacked or supporting the attackers?
