Library partners with Extension Office to bring virtual programs

The Boyle County Public Library often partners with the Boyle County Extension Office to bring educational programs to the community throughout the year. Since 2020 has been anything but typical, programs have been redesigned to be done virtually while still maintaining the hands-on experience.

“Boyle County Cooperative Extension is a treasure for the county,” said Public Services Librarian Caleb Conover. “With the many services and educational opportunities it provides, Extension makes a natural partner for the library, and we have collaborated with them for years in serving the community. It’s only fitting that we continue working together to adapt to the current circumstances.”

This month the library has teamed up with Alethea Price, Boyle County Extension Agent for Family and Consumer Sciences, to bring two virtual, hands-on programs.

Cooking Skills for Tweens and Teens

“Cooking Skills for Tweens and Teens” is a six-week tutorial program. Developed with the novice cook in mind, this weekly virtual program teaches basic cooking skills. The first three episodes cover how to read a recipe, how to measure, kitchen knife skills, and food safety.

New videos premiere on Thursdays at 4 p.m. through Oct. 29 on the Boyle County Public Library Children’s Programming Facebook page and on the library’s YouTube channel. Previous episodes in the series can also be found there.

Each week participants (ages 9-18) can pick up a free kit of cooking supplies that will be used to follow along with the latest video. Current kits can be picked up at the Boyle County Public Library or the Boyle County Extension Office on Friday through Thursday before that week’s video premieres. Kits from previous weeks may still be picked up at the Extension Office at 99 Corporate Drive in Danville. No registration is required. One kit per household is recommended.

Made from Scratch

In addition to the youth cooking program, the library is also offering a program for adults (ages 18+). More experienced cooks can take part in “Made from Scratch: Homemade Pumpkin Pie,” a new program that shows how to make this classic Thanksgiving dessert from scratch.

The free kit includes a pumpkin and prepackaged spices. Kits will be available starting Monday, Oct. 19, and will remain available throughout the week, while supplies last. Pickups will be available at both the Extension Office and the library. One kit per household.
