All summer long the Boyle County Public Library offers fun, free events and activities for its patrons.

In addition to virtual field trips, live virtual performers, take-and-make crafts, and in-person storytimes, patrons of all ages are invited to take part in the Summer Reading challenge. People who read for 10 days will earn a free prize book plus tickets to put toward a prize drawing for any of the many prize bundles the library is offering this summer.

Prize bundles are on display in the library lobby. Information on how to register to participate and photos of the prize bundles are available online at BoylePubLib.org/SummerReading. Here is a closer look at some of the activities coming up at the library:

• Mutts with Manners

On Saturday, June 12 at noon, Join Kathy and Sherry from Northpoint Training Center’s Mutts with Manners program to learn about being a dog owner. In the video, they will discuss how to pick a puppy, animal communication, basic care and training tips, and common questions people may have.

• Virtual D&D

Dungeons & Dragons is often called the greatest role-playing game of all time. The library offers virtual Dungeons & Dragons clubs for teens and adults. Teens (ages 13-18) can play on Saturday, June 12 at 2 p.m., while adults (ages 18+) can play on Sunday at noon or 4:30 p.m. Sessions are run via several web-based services such as Roll20.net and Discordapp.com. Information on how to register to play is available on each of the event listings on the library’s website.

• Crafts & More

Families are invited to pick up Crafts & More grab bags at the library. Each bag will have two themed crafts and a STEM project. The theme for June is ocean animals. Kits are available for pickup beginning Tuesday, June 15. This program kit is recommended for ages 3-8.

• DIY: Hummingbird Feeders

This simple DIY craft kit will help you make a hummingbird feeder that you can hang near your home to attract our smallest feathered friends. The kit includes paint, PVC material, and small decorations. (Nectar is not included.) An instructional video will be released concurrently with the program. Kits will be available for pickup in the lobby beginning Tuesday, June 15 while supplies last. This project is recommended for ages 18 and up.

• Tween DIY

Tween DIY shows tweens (ages 9-13) how to make useful and fun items each month. In June, we’ll be making aquariums in a jar. Pick up your free kit of supplies at the library beginning Tuesday, June 15 at 10 a.m., then follow along with the instructional video at home.

• Teen Take & Make: Monster Book of Monsters

Teens are invited to make their very own Monster Book of Monsters from the world of Harry Potter. Use faux-fur fabric, cardboard, and other supplies to complete this wild project. Kits will be available beginning Tuesday, June 15, while supplies last. This project is for ages 13-18. No registration is required.

• Liberty Nature Center

On Thursday, June 17 at 10:30 a.m., take a virtual educational animal tour of Liberty Nature Center featuring bird species that might include owls, hawks, kestrel, vultures, and an eagle. The Liberty Nature Center is a wildlife rehabilitation and education center that has over 20 permanent residents that serve as ambassadors to their wild counterparts.

• Virtual Book Club for Adults

On Thursday, June 17 at 6:30 p.m., the library will be hosting a regular Book Club and discussion via Zoom. This month the club is reading and discussing Water for Elephants by Sarah Gruen. Several copies of the book for this discussion are available from the library’s collection. The link to join the discussion can be found on the event listing on the library’s website. No registration required.

• Professional Pet Photo Sessions

Make an appointment for your pet to have a photo session. The library will host Professional Pet Photo Sessions on Saturday, June 19. Professional photographer Laura Stanley of Laura B Photography will be on hand to capture images of your beautiful pet. Each creature will be photographed and receive two professionally edited images. Sessions will last for 15-minutes. Online registration is required and limited spaces are available. Appointments will be held throughout the day in the Reading Garden at the library. The link to register is available in the event listing on the library’s website.

• Virtual Adult Trivia Night

On Saturday, June 19 at 7 p.m. the library will host a trivia night for adults. Hosted via Zoom, participants can enjoy friendly, social competition from the comfort of home at this interactive event. Trivia questions will be selected from a large variety of topics to give everyone a chance to feel like the smartest person in the room. There will be three timed rounds with short breaks in-between, if needed. Participants will be divided into teams upon arrival, but team requests can be made as well. Anyone interested in participating can join the event via the Zoom link in the event listing on the library’s website. This program is recommended for ages 18 and up.
