News release

The Boyle County Public Library offers fun, free events and activities for people to participate in all summer long. Patrons of all ages are invited to take part in the Summer Reading challenge.

Those who read for 10 days will earn a free prize book plus tickets to put toward a prize drawing for any of the many prize bundles the library is offering this summer. Prize bundles are on display in the library lobby. Information on how to register to participate and photos of the prize bundles are available online at BoylePubLib.org/SummerReading.

On-going events this summer include a Community Mural and a Historical Treasure Hunt. Weekly events include virtual and in-person storytimes, ukulele lessons, Yoga for Kids, and more. Here is a closer look at some of the library’s upcoming activities:

Virtual Field Trip: Mammoth Cave Wildlife Center

In this Virtual Field Trip, we will be doing a walkthrough of the Mammoth Cave Wildlife Museum, located in Cave City, Kentucky. Join us as we explore this 14,000-square-foot building filled with rare and exotic animals such as tigers, lions, bears, leopards, deer, sheep, ox, and much more. This video will premiere on the library’s YouTube channel on Saturday, July 17 at noon.

Axe Throwing for Teens

On Saturday, July 17 from 2 to 4 p.m., teens are invited to try throwing axes in a custom-built trailer where they can compete against friends to see who can hit the bullseye.

At this free event, instructors from Bluegrass Karting & Events will be present to guide participants in how to throw. Registration and a signed waiver are required to participate. Waivers may be picked up at the library or downloaded from the event listing on the library’s website. No open-toed shoes are permitted. This event will adhere to state and federal health guidelines, including but not limited to facial masks and social distancing.

Tickets are based on 15-minute appointments and each appointment can accommodate six participants. This event is for ages 14-18, but all minors must be accompanied by their parent or legal guardian. (Rain will cancel this event. Any cancellation will be announced on the library’s website.)

Virtual Adult Trivia Night

On Saturday, July 17 at 7 p.m. the library will host a trivia night for adults. Hosted via Zoom, participants can enjoy friendly, social competition from the comfort of home at this interactive event. Trivia questions will be selected from a large variety of topics to give everyone a chance to feel like the smartest person in the room. There will be three timed rounds with short breaks in-between, if needed. Participants will be divided into teams upon arrival, but team requests can be made as well. Anyone interested in participating can join the event via the Zoom link in the event listing on the library’s website. This program is recommended for ages 18 and up.

Made from Scratch

In this video tutorial, Alethea Bruzek from the Boyle County Extension Office will teach you how to make cat treats from scratch. Pick up a kit at the library or the Extension Office beginning Tuesday, July 20 at 10 a.m.

How to Create

This video series will teach you how to create art with a variety of mediums. On July 20, stop by the library to pick up a kit that contains everything you will need to learn how to sculpt with clay, then watch the instructional video when you are ready to get started. (Ages 9-18)

Humane Society Visit

The Boyle County Humane Society will visit the library on Tuesday, July 20 from 10 a.m. to noon to provide information about pet adoption.

DIY Friday

Patrons are invited to learn basic and advanced do-it-yourself skills from a DIY veteran. This month the topic will be “Essential Knots.” The video will premiere on the library’s YouTube channel on Friday, July 23 at 5 p.m.

Teen D&D

On Saturday, July 24 from 2-4 p.m. teens are invited to play the greatest role-playing game from the Wizards of the Coast. At this in-person event, teens (ages 13-18) can venture through campaigns that will test their ability to work together and conquer foes in this tabletop adventure. Registration is required to play. Go to boylepublib.org/teendnd to register.

Virtual Adult D&D

Dungeons & Dragons is often called the greatest role-playing game of all time. The library offers a virtual Dungeons & Dragons club for adults that meets on two Sundays each month. Adults (ages 18+) can join a virtual campaign on Sunday, July 25 at noon or 4:30 p.m. Sessions are run via several web-based services such as Roll20.net and Discordapp.com. Additional information on how to play is available on the event listing on the library’s website. To register, contact the Boyle County Public Library via email at library@boylepublib.org.
