Juanita Curry Smith “Cubby” Durham

1944 – 2021

Juanita Curry Smith “Cubby” Durham, 76, died July 29, 2021 in Danville. Born September 1, 1944 in Nashville, Tennessee, she was the daughter of the late Austin and Florine Thorne Smith. Cubby was a graduate of Mississippi State College for Women and earned her Masters at the University of Tennessee. She served for twenty-one years in the U.S. Navy and retired as a Captain. Cubby was a Middle School art teacher for thirty-five years, working in Tennessee and later in Jessamine County, Kentucky. She was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church and enjoyed creating art, reading, rescuing animals, trail riding, camping, traveling, shopping, and drinking champagne. She is survived by her husband, John L. Durham, III “Johnny”; her three daughters, Sidney Durham, of Lexington, KY, Jaymie (Steven) Ross, of Middleburg, KY, and Caribeth (Brian) Brown, of Roanoke, AL; and her five grandchildren, John Sawyer Durham, Hunter Ross, Gage Ross, Lillie Brown, and Mattie Brown.
