Library to host interactive games and STEM activities

The Boyle County Public Library offers free activities for patrons of all ages. The library is currently hosting Dinosaur Discovery, an exhibit featuring over 120 fossils and castings from Dr. John Hankla’s curated collection. Stop by to explore the free exhibit, which will remain on display until April 1. Virtual tours and interactive school visits are also available. In addition to the exhibit, library patrons can also enjoy interactive activities such as crafting projects, games, and weekly storytimes. Here is a closer look at some of the upcoming events at the library:

Germination Station
If you are looking to start a garden or would like to foster some indoor plants, join us on Saturday, March 12 from 1:00-3:00 PM for this seed germination program where you can take home your own germinating set of seeds to plant this spring. This event will be held in the library rotunda. (All ages welcome.)

Board Games Club for Adults
The library will pull out its collection of board games on Saturday, March 12 from 5:00-8:00 PM. Adults are encouraged to bring a friend and try out some new games or play old favorites. The library has games for all levels of players and staff eager to show you how to play. This after-hours event will be held in the Community Room at the library. (Ages 18+)

Adult D&D
Dungeons & Dragons is often called the greatest role-playing game of all time. The library offers a D&D club for adults that meets at the library on the second and fourth Sundays of the month. Adults can join a session on Sunday, March 13 at noon or 4:30 PM. No experience is necessary, but registration is required. To register, sign up at the library or email library@boylepublib.org. (Ages 18+)

KidStir
On Tuesday, March 15, children can make St. Patrick’s Day snacks at home as they follow along with our instructional video. Kits will be available for pickup starting Tuesday morning (while supplies last), and may also be reserved using our Curbside Pickup service. Call the Library at 859-238-7323 starting the day the kits are available to ask for a kit using curbside pickup. The video will premiere on the library’s YouTube channel. No registration required. (Ages 5-8)

Teen Writing Club
On Tuesdays in March, teens are invited to learn about various aspects of writing in this series. Join us to hone your writing skills in the areas of plot, theme, character creation, descriptive writing, and dialog. This writing workshop will be held weekly on Tuesdays at 4:00 PM in the Community Room. Join as you are able. (Ages 13-18)

Crafting for Keeps
At this program series you will be guided through the process of making a craft that you get to keep. On Tuesday, March 15 at 6:00 PM we will be making Bath Crafts, including bath bombs, bath teas, and sugar scrubs. This event will be held in the Community Room. Extra supplies will be made into kits that will be available in the library lobby while supplies last. (Ages 18+)

Third Thursday AM Book Club
In March the book club will be reading First: Sandra Day O’Connor by Evan Thomas. Join the book discussion on Thursday, March 17 at 10:30 AM in the Community Room. (Ages 18+)

Master Builders: 3D Dinosaurs
On Thursday, March 17 from 4:00-6:00 PM, all youth ages can use their STEM skills to build 3D dinosaur models of any size. Cardboard and art supplies will be provided to create and color each dinosaur. All 3D dinosaurs can be taken home by their builders. This event will be held in the Community Room at the library. (Youth & Families)

Magic: The Gathering
On Thursday, March 17 from 4:00 to 7:00 PM, the library will host Magic: The Gathering, a fun, fast-paced strategy card game from Wizards of the Coast. This event will be held in the Community Room at the library. (Ages 13+)

Crafters Who Care
On Thursdays from 6:00-8:00 PM, join us in knitting and crocheting items for those in need. This knitting and crochet group welcomes current and new members to weekly crafting meetups at the library. Some materials provided. Beginners are welcome. This event will be held in the Reading Room. (Ages 13+)

Game On!
Teens are invited to play video games at the library on Fridays from 4:00-5:20 PM. Battle with friends in Super Smash Bros or race in Mario Kart 8. This event will be held on 5th Level of the library. (Ages 13-18)

Chess Mix
On Saturday, March 19 from 2:00-4:00 PM, visit the library and enjoy an afternoon of chess and a savory snack. This program is for all skill levels. This event will be held in the Reading Room. (All ages)

Teen D&D
On Saturday, March 19 from 2:00-4:00 PM teens can play what some call the greatest role-playing game of all time. At this in-person event, players will venture through campaigns that will test their ability to work together and conquer foes in this tabletop adventure. Registration is required to play. Free Tax Prep
The Boyle County Public Library has once again partnered with the AARP Foundation and the United Way of the Bluegrass to host free tax preparation service. Now through mid-April, tax professionals will be set up in the library on Tuesdays and Saturdays to assist people with the tax filing process. This service is made possible through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. These tax preparation services are available by appointment only.

AARP tax assistance services will be available on Tuesdays from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Although anyone can make an appointment, the program is especially focused on low-to-moderate-income taxpayers who are age 50 and older. The United Way VITA Tax Preparation Assistance will be available by appointment only on Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. for people whose household income was less than $56,000 this past year. For more information and to schedule an appointment call 2-1-1 or go online to uwbg.org/CKEEP.
