Glass artist to share design concept for Centre College sculpture garden

Glass artist Brook White will be sharing about his design for the Stephen Rolfe Powell Memorial Sculpture Garden for Centre College. The event will be at CentreWorks on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.

Behind every work of art is a story; what story is more worth telling than that of a life well lived? The sculpture garden oasis is dedicated to the memory of beloved Centre alumnus, faculty member, and renowned glassworks artist Stephen Rolfe Powell, who passed away in 2019. White is a former student of Powell.

The garden will serve as an outdoor classroom located near Grant Hall at the Norton Center. The circular glass and metal sculpture will stand 25 feet tall, allowing people to walk through it. The floor will have an illuminated circle with shards from some of Powell’s glass art. The area will have a garden, walking path and a small amphitheater with outdoor seating. Construction will begin this month.

The CentreWorks event will allow people to learn more about the upcoming project and the man who inspired it, and help the community honor the legacy of Powell’s life and art. White will share his journey from the project’s concept to reality.

CentreWorks is located on the third floor of the Hub building in Danville. For more information about this event and more, visit centreworks.org.
