Following the passage of Senate Bill 150 through the Kentucky General Assembly on March 16, I am reminded of words from Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in “Letter from Birmingham Jail” — “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly affects all indirectly.”

Several of our students at Danville High School rallied against SB 150 in February. We know there is a portion of our student population who feels this legislation would harm them, and we have staff who feel the same way.

I just want to make sure our families know that we’re going to support their kids to the fullest of our ability and protect them from harm’s way the best way we can. Through our social-emotional learning (SEL) teams in our buildings across the district and through mental health services and referrals, we will ensure every child has an advocate and a support who they can reach in a timely fashion.

We are cognizant of the law and its provisions, and we will support our students and their educational journey while adhering to the law.

As stated by Commissioner of Education Jason Glass in his response to the bill’s passage, I also feel adamant that this bill has the potential to be harmful to students. I also agree with his statement that we see and love all of our students and continue to protect them from bullying and bigotry.

I want our focus to be on truly strengthening the instructional trajectory of our students. The goal of our district is to educate, protect and advocate for them.
