Summer Reading “All Together Now” is in full swing at the Boyle County Public Library, providing families and people of all ages fun, affordable activities to enjoy this summer. This year, the library will offer many friendship-themed and summer camp-inspired activities. Exciting performances, outdoor movie nights, STEM programs, crafts, and storytimes are included in an extensive list of free events for a variety of ages. In addition to the activities, patrons are invited to take part in the Summer Reading challenge. Anyone who reads for 10 days and logs their reading will earn a free prize book plus tickets to put toward a prize drawing for any of the many prize bundles the library is offering this summer. Prize bundles are on display in the library lobby. Information on how to register to participate can be found at BoylePubLib.org/SummerReading. Here is a closer look at some of the upcoming Summer Reading events:

Karate for Kids

In June, kids can join instructor Shinji Matsuda from US Yoshukai Karate on Monday mornings at 10:30 a.m. to learn karate for beginners. Learn from a 4th degree Master with years of experience teaching kids of all ages. Registration and signed waivers are required to participate. Class size is limited. (Ages 10 and under)

David Farmer Art Exhibit Opening Reception

The Boyle County Public Library will host an opening reception for David Farmer’s art exhibit “Bluegrass Byways,” on Monday, June 5 from 4-5:30 p.m. in the Mahan Gallery. The exhibit features oil paintings completed from photos taken during the artist’s 50+ years of travels throughout the southeastern and central region of the Bluegrass State of Kentucky. The exhibit will be on display at the library through June 30, 2023.

About the artist: Farmer is an alumnus of The Columbus College of Art & Design, Ohio, and The University of the Cumberlands, BA English, Williamsburg, KY. He is an oil painter of over 30 years of experience and has work in numerous private and corporate collections as well as regional galleries. He has a home studio on Herrington Lake and is an artist-in-residence at the Art Center of the Bluegrass in Danville.

Summer Storytime

Join us at the library for summer storytime. Storytimes in June and July will be held outdoors in the Library Park on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings at 10:30 a.m. with ASL interpretation both days. Each week at Storytime we will read themed stories and have a sensory activity for toddlers and preschoolers to enjoy. Our summer theme is “All Together Now,” and what better way to bring kids together than with summer camp activities. This week the theme for storytime is summer camp. (Ages 1-5)

YA Nailed It: Abstract Painting

On Tuesday, June 6 at 2 p.m., tweens and teens can put their creative skills to the test by recreating artistic masterpieces. Even if their projects don’t turn out exactly like the expert’s work, every unique design will be a work of art! We will be creating abstract art using two different techniques: marbled painting and string-pull painting. Each technique needs to be executed just right and you only get one chance to create the final effect. Can you nail these artistic projects on the first try? This event will be held in the Community Room (Ages 11-18)

Summer Fiction Writing Workshop

On Tuesday, June 6 from 5:30-7 p.m., join local author Paul Stansbury for the first session of a 4-part workshop on recording and authoring your own fictional story. Using tools and lessons learned during the series, participants will work towards creating and receiving feedback on a piece of fictional writing, later shared in a published work. This workshop will be held in the Conference Room. (Ages 18+)

Family Game Night

Join us for Family Game Night at the library on Tuesday, June 6 from 6-8 p.m. This is a social event for all-ages where you, your family, and your peers can come and enjoy a fun night of pizza, competition, and cooperation. The library will provide the food and a full collection of board games. Staff will be available to help you learn the games. This event will be held in the Community Room. (All ages)

Kids Summer Camp

On Wednesday afternoons at 2 p.m. this summer, the library will host activities based on different camp themes. Activities will include crafts, games, and STEM experiments. Each week will be a different theme so kids can keep coming back for more. This week the theme is summer camp and we’ll be painting with anything but a paintbrush. Kids will get crafty and creative by painting with unusual “brushes” such as toilet paper rolls, feathers, and stamps. Events will be held outdoors or in the Community Room, based on weather conditions. (Ages 5-11)

Thursday FunDay: Mr. Molecule

As part of the summer Thursday FunDays performance series, on Thursday, June 8 at 10:30 a.m. the library will bring Mr. Molecule to the Jennie Rogers Community Center. Mr. Molecule’s FIN-tastic Friends Science Show is a high-energy, audience-interactive presentation that offers a powerful message of kindness and friendship towards all animals. The science is core curriculum, the scientific effects are terrific, and funny puppets keep the laughter rolling. ASL interpretation will be available at this event. (All ages)

Pop-up Potluck: Community Recipe Exchange

Share your favorite recipes and sample new ones at this community potluck. On Thursday, June 8 at 6 p.m., the Boyle County Extension office will get things started with some dishes of their own; all participants are encouraged to try their hand. In June, the ingredient of the month is asparagus, but any type of recipe is welcome. Cook up your favorite recipe and bring it to this monthly potluck, then add it to the library’s recipe database. This is a social event with food to share, friends to be made, and fun to be had. Supplies are limited and will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. This event will be held in the Community Room. (Adults)

Move, Sing, and Play

On Friday mornings in June, discover active music making with others through singing, dancing, creative movement, and playing music games and easy instruments. This event will be held on Friday, June 9 at 10:30 a.m. in the Community Room. (Ages 6-9)

Starlight Movie Night

Watch a movie outside under the stars at the library every Friday evening beginning June 9. First, come early to join our Pre-show Party to play outdoor games. Then, set out your lawn chair in the Library Park to settle in to watch a movie perfect for the whole family. Movie starts at dusk (around 9 p.m.) with an expected runtime of 90-120 minutes. Free popcorn will be available. More information, including film titles, are available in the event listing on the library’s website.

On June 9, watch a family-friendly animated film about the untold story of one twelve-year-old’s dream to become the world’s greatest supervillain. Rated PG; 1 hr 27 min (All ages)

Animal Petting Zoo

On Saturday, June 10 from 10 a.m.-noon stop by the library to visit a petting zoo hosted by Honey Hill Farm, featuring more than 20 different live animals. Get up close to the animals and say hello. Animals will include chickens, rabbits, ducks, sheep, goats, alpacas, a cow, and a mini horse or donkey. This event will be held in the Library parking lot. (All ages)

Teen D&D

On Saturday, June 10 from 2-4 p.m. teens can play what some call the greatest role-playing game of all time. Players will venture through campaigns that will test their ability to work together and conquer foes in this tabletop adventure. This event will be held on the fifth Level on the second and fourth Saturdays of the month. (Teens)

Adult D&D

The library offers a Dungeons & Dragons club for adults that meets at the library on the second and fourth Sundays of the month. Adults can join a session on Sunday, June 11 at noon or 4:30 p.m. No experience is necessary, but registration is required. To register, sign up at the library or email library@boylepublib.org. (Ages 18+)
